"Unfinished Business" is Ray Dan Parker's first published novel. Set in a small town in northern Florida in 1968, this is a book about the sort of folks who give Southern rednecks a bad name. Tom Williams grew up in Monrovia, Florida, went to the University, and then joined the Navy in time to see early action and be wounded in Vietnam. Now he's a reporter for a Tampa newspaper returning from covering the funeral of Martin Luther King and he stops for a short visit with his grandmother who raised him after his parents' death in a supposed automobile accident.The quick overnight turns into a frantic week of mayhem and murder. Somehow Parker makes it all seem totally authentic. He writes: "The emergency room at Jasper Memorial was busy, as usual. There were all manner of knife and gunshot wounds and a young girl who'd gone into labor. She looked to be all of twelve."
There are the usual Bubbas and Sonnys—in this case, two deputy sheriffs—and larcenous bankers and men who seem to like wearing hoods over their heads when they go lynching. Monrovia is not going to make it as a tourist attraction, although that, too, enters the picture.
Tom Williams is a very likeable hero, although he seems to sometimes shoot first and then ask questions. It all fits, however. Those were indeed strange times in America, rampant with assassinations and anger and yet there was the inevitable change that even small southern communities couldn't escape. You don't have to like the people who called Monrovia home, but it’s a good thing to remember that there was a time when a good many Americans had at least a shotgun handy and had to rely on local, often corrupt, law enforcement. Of course, Jasper County was "dry"; maybe that explains the ill temper?
Bookreview.com recommends "Unfinished Business" as a fine addition to the crime genre and hopes to hear from Ray Dan Parker again.

Ray Dan Parker has written an exciting novel full of mystery, intrigue, and surprise. He speaks with an authentic Southern voice as he describes small town life in the days when children had the freedom to explore and experience growing up into the adult world. The story is well written and holds the readers attention to the surprising ending.
Really enjoyed this book
I loved this book by this author! It was well written, flowed beautifully. I wanted to keep on reading to find out what was going to happen next. I cared about the characters in the book. They were interesting. I could also identify with much of what was happening in the story. The title is just perfect. I highly recommend this book and know you will enjoy reading it also!
